I am excited to have my first reading at Elliot Bay Book company - I'll read a bit from my Monkey World book and there will be a few other local picture book creators reading too!

There is something for everyone in this line-up featuring Suzanne Kaufman, author and illustrator of I Love Monkey; Matthew Porter, creator of many board books and Monkey World; Wendy Wahman, author and illustrator of A Cat Like That and Don't Lick the Dog; and Steven D'Amico, co-creator and illustrator of the Ella series and Suki the Very Loud Bunny. I'll be vending at Folklife Festival this weekend

I'm so excited to be a part of Urban Craft Uprising at the Northwest Folklife Festival, which is happening May 27th - 30th. If you have not heard of Northwest Folklife you probably just moved to Seattle as it is going 40 years now. It is an amazing folk music and storytelling festival at the Seattle center which is free! The Indie Roots area will be a new addition this year, this area will include music programmed by KEXP, a beer garden, AND 25+ craft vendors, me included!

My ABC Poster at Seattle Libraries

I recently got in touch with the Seattle library system and donated 27 ABC posters for the kiddies area of each branch. I snapped a shot of it up at the central library. It was pretty exciting to see it go up at the central library as the last poster they had up in the same spot was from 2005. Fingers crossed mine stays up for a few years! Librarians have always been very supportive of my books and I am very pleased to be able to give back a little for all the support they have shown me.

I'd love to hear if anyone has seen it at any of the other branches yet?

So nice to know that people "get" what I am trying to do with my books - art and learning all rolled into one!

In a toddler’s world, story time can be a great opportunity for daddy (and mommy!) and child to bond. A children’s book can serve as a portal into the near-limitless imagination of a child. It’s also a great way for the little one to learn and utilize that powerful sponge that resides in their little heads to the fullest.

My son and have had the privilege of enjoying such a book together for the past couple of months. “Calling All Animals” is a children’s book from Seattle children’s book illustrator and writer Matthew Porter. Matthew has built quite a reputation in the Pacific Northwest as an artist thanks to his series of “monkey world” paintings and products. His artwork is refreshing and very Pacific Northwest—a combination of stark lines mixed with an ardent eye for complimentary colors. It’s refreshing to see a children’s book that is simple enough for toddlers, while at the same aesthetically pleasing to the discerning eye of the adult art critic in all of us.

“Calling All Animals” at its core is a memory exercise for kids, and it works wonders. I love how each animal is shown on one page, followed by the nomenclature of that animal when grouped with more than one of its own species (e.g., a sheep, followed by a flock of sheep). Sure, the classic animal favorites of children are there (sheep, pig, lion, etc.), but the treat is discovering what you call a group of critters that aren’t your average run-of-the-mill critters (A ‘colony’ of badgers, who knew?). What’s more amazing is witnessing my son learn them all and repeat them to me by memory.

Overall, I highly recommend not only “Calling All Animals,” but for everyone to check out Matthew Porter’s other works. I’m looking forward to seeing his next children's book featuring an engine driving monkey and the excitement and perils of a train journey in Monkey World!
